At the urging of Babe, his favorite aunt, Steve Glenn reluctantly agrees to launch a search for a relative of years ago who has remained a blank page in his aunts Family Tree. The relative -- his great-grandfather. A lost cause, he is certain. All his aunt knows is that he was a soldier in the Civil War and the family believed he had been lost in action in a battle somewhere, they knew not where. What transpires becomes a learning experience that winds up changing Steves life.

Steves search ultimately takes him to such places as the National Archives in Washington, as well as to visits with certain Civil War buffs along the East Coast and to many interesting locations near the coast starting with the Cape Fear Museum in Wilmington, North Carolina. Also theres a visit to a family cemetery with a girl named Linda, who ultimately proves a major help to Steve in his search. And out of the search grows a man who becomes known as The Man from the Fifth Oneida.
